Honored to again be a reviewer – Humanism in Medicine Essay Contest

Since 1999 The Gold Foundation has held an annual Essay Contest asking medical students to write a piece based on their reflection on a specific aspect of humanism in medicine.

The Foundation is a public, 501 [c] [3] not-for-profit organization, established in 1988 by Arnold Gold, MD, Sandra Gold, EdD and their colleagues at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York.

Humanistic medical care is not simply compassion. It is the best of medicine. When skilled physicians build caring, trusting and collaborative relationships with patients, studies reveal more appropriate medical decisions, better patient adherence with treatment plans, and less costly healthcare outcomes.

For the past three years I have been blessed to join a panel of physicians and other accomplished writers to review and select the top three essays.

These essays are amazing and inspiring (as are the writers and the process). And the winners have their essays published in Academic Medicine, the journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
