Individualized Patient Care (IPC), fluff or impact?

In February of 2017, I had the opportunity to share the importance of Individualized Patient Care (IPC)* as part of a “10 Minutes that Count” session (think TED Talk) at the Studer Group Engagement conference in Dallas.

*From the Studer Group website:

IPC is about the patient — learning from the patient and aligning their care and their words accordingly. It is proven to:

  • Reduce patient anxiety
  • Improve nurse communication
  • Provide clearer pain focus and management
  • Increase teamwork
  • Increase ownership
  • Increase efficiency
  • Increase CAHPS (Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems)
  • Improve patient perception of care

And while much of the feedback was positive relative to the IPC message shared …

“Loved the individualized tool for patients.”

“Connected right to my heart!”

“Good message about individual relationships and how important they are to what we do.”

“Platinum Rule: Treat patients the way they want to be treated. Never assume always ask.”

… for some, the message shared was considered “fluffy” and “basic”.

Which, for me, very much relates to a message I first learned and then shared so long ago (and originally published by Hospital Impact) …

Doctors promise holistic care under Hippocratic Oath

Call it “woo woo”, call it squishy, call it warm and fuzzy, … call it what you will. But as the [Hippocratic] Oath illustrates … warmth, sympathy, understanding, holism, and joy in healing are critical factors required for any optimal healing model.

And of course today I would add, “as is focusing on the Individual Patient (and Family)”.

We still have much work to do, and yet with tools such as Studer Group’s IPC, I do believe over time these concepts will resonate with more and more people, and together we will continue to turn the dial, significantly improve the care we provide to our patients and families, honor them, ourselves, and our mission, and improve the health of our communities.
