Be it basketball or healthcare or other … ego and hubris often lead to harm. An ego unchecked and hubris often lead to short-sightedness, irrationality and harmful behaviors since each create barriers to continuous learning, each prevent a coach / a leader from stopping and examining their own behavior (from looking in the mirror) or from considering the opinions of or effects on others from their behavior, and each can stagnate growth and improvement.
In basketball this often leads to player mistreatment (including bullying), team disfunction, poor performance, and in youth sports additional harm to our children which often remains with them and adversely impacts them their whole lives.
In healthcare this often leads to doctor, nurse and staff mistreatment (including bullying), team disfunction, poor performance, burnout, patient harm and even death.
It is only when we humble ourselves, we open our hearts and our minds, we examine ourselves, our thoughts, our motives, our behaviors … only then do we we continuously learn, continuously grow and continuously position others to do the same.
And only then do we live up to the title of coach, of leader.
